Shima's Story

From a land that time forgot has emerged one of the most gifted Colorists of our time, and indeed, one of the most remarkable art stories of the late 20th century.

Like a poet who commands words to perform ingenious feats of expression, artist Alush Shima masterfully employs a wide spectrum of color to reveal extraordinary beauty in life. Often depicting affectionate interpretations of the virgin landscapes and charming flowers of his native Albania, Shima's vibrant canvases dance with energy and celebration- a vision so pure that many viewers are taken back to the magic of childhood. Thick, dynamic brushstrokes, moreover, reveal the harmony of a brilliant technician. However, Alush's palette also features mysterious dark shadows, recalling the years of repression in his country- a frightening time when the ruling Communists considered his vibrant art "decadent". In 1973, under threat of imprisonment, Shima burned over 150 works. Later, he continued to paint in secret for almost two decades, hiding his works in an attic. In this atmosphere of gloom, the artist found strength in color and beauty.

Since democratic changes in 1990, Shima has had sell-out exhibitions throughout the world and has become a hero to the people of Albania. In 1994 he was appointed Director of Albania's National Art Gallery, and in 1996, he had the honor of being elected to one of the country's first democratic parliaments. To this day, most of Shima's art reflects an outpouring of love for his fragile homeland, yet his youthful, optimistic vision is unquestionably universal. His invigorating art gives strength to viewers worldwide, and demand for his oils continues to skyrocket.
